Seizing opportunities to act together

Dear parents,
Have a great spring break! I hope you’ll enjoy some outdoor activities and family time.
The Minister of Education has announced the first Violence and Bullying Prevention in Schools Week, to be held from March 17 to 21. Thematic days are planned, including one for parents. I hope that this week will be a unifying moment that will enable all the school network to mobilize for respect and good civility. Civility issues are a societal problem: all individuals, organizations and authorities have a role to play in finding solutions and acting as role models. The FCPQ intends to play an active role. It’s a week that fits in with our year of well-being: we intend to take advantage of this opportunity to show that parents are committed to being positive promoters of respect, civil behaviour and collaboration.
Preventing violence and bullying is all the more important in light of the recommendations made by the National Student Ombudsman (PNE) in its first annual activity report. This report was eagerly awaited by many parents involved in the school system. The findings show that this new resource was needed to provide an independent recourse for parents and students regarding the quality of services, and also to highlight issues in our network that don’t always get the attention they deserve.
In their first article on the Action Parents blog, the PNE team points out that anti-bullying and anti-violence plans are sometimes incomplete and unknown, and that situations of violence and bullying are not often managed optimally. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the PNE team for their contribution to our blog!
In my February note, I announced the launch of the second edition of the national survey on the well-being of Quebec families. I am now delighted to announce that 11,000 parents took part in this year’s survey. Once again, the participation exceeded my expectations, and I’d like to thank our invaluable partners in this survey: Dr. Mélissa Généreux, the English Parents’ Committee Association, the Association pour la santé publique du Québec and the Réseau québécois pour la réussite educative.
A sneak peek at the survey results is scheduled for noon on March 12, five years after the announcement of school closures due to COVID-19, a period that affected families and their well-being.
Dr. Généreux’s full unveiling of the results is scheduled for May 31, 2025, as part of our Federation’s annual National Activity, on the theme “Wellness… the key to success!” The complete program is now available on our website, and registration is open to all with a preferential rate until April 1. I look forward to welcoming parents and their school partners to what is promising to be a resourcing and stimulating event!
But before we get to May, I’m looking forward to catching up with FCPQ delegates at our March General Council. There are a number of interesting topics on the agenda, plus an afternoon of sharing and creating new content… if you like listening to podcasts, stay tuned for what’s coming up!
Until next time,
Mélanie Laviolette
